Fraport Sets New Climate Protection Targets

Environmental Operations

Frankfurt - Fraport AG has met its climate protection targets way ahead of schedule. The targets, which were set for the year 2020, have already been reached in the previous business year 2016. Fraport has therefore set itself new climate protection targets (this time for 2030) modeled on the German government’s Climate Action Plan. By 2030, Fraport AG is aiming to cut CO2 emissions produced by operational activities at Frankfurt Airport to 80,000 metric tons. Compared with 1990 levels, which is the base year stipulated by the international climate protection agreement, this equates to a reduction of 65 percent. Emissions per transport unit are set to be reduced to 0.9 kg of CO2 per passenger or 100 kg of airfreight or airmail.

The new climate protection targets are presented in the latest combined financial and sustainability report for business year 2016, titled: “2016 Compact – Gute Reise! We Make It Happen”, which was issued by the Fraport Group today, May 10.

Fraport AG’s chairman of the executive board, Dr. Stefan Schulte, explained: “The fact that we have met our CO2reduction target four years early shows just how successful our measures are. We will continue to optimize the energy efficiency ratings of our buildings, facilities and processes on an ongoing basis. This will be possible not least thanks to the efforts of our dedicated employees in Frankfurt and all over the world. We introduce some of them in person in our latest report. We also provide our stakeholders and interested members of the public with a summary of the Fraport Group’s business performance, as well as the company’s goals, activities and progress in terms of responsible corporate management. This encompasses compliance with the ten principles of the UN Global Compact, to which we have been committed since 2007. It was therefore a matter of course for us to also incorporate sustainable development goals – which are part of the UN’s 2030 Agenda – in our report. We are focusing our efforts on the eleven goals that are outlined in the ‘Compact’ report.”

The “2016 Compact” report also explores in more detail Fraport’s new mission statement and corporate vision, summarized under the slogan “Gute Reise! We Make It Happen”. Employee profiles illustrate what lies behind the “We” at Fraport. The report will also focus on the Group’s increasingly important international activities. New to this year’s edition will be five extra chapters containing information on Fraport’s international Group companies (in which Fraport holds a majority stake). A separate English-language version will be published for each of these Group companies, in which the information on “their” respective company will appear in the local language. In addition to its Frankfurt Airport home base, Fraport has operations at other airports worldwide located on four continents. In 2018, the company is also planning to take over management of two Brazilian airports, in Fortaleza and Porto Alegre.

Fraport continues to comply with the demanding standards of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) by publishing a separate GRI report online.
